Checklist for Evaluating Dog Boarding Services

BOARDING CHECKLIST

We compiled a checklist that can help you make sure your little friend is safe, happy, and well cared for in your absence, regardless of the boarding option you choose.

Make sure to tour the location in person or virtually. What you should watch for:

Dog analyzing the dog boarding service options and its pros and cons
  • Cleanliness and hygiene;

  • Safety measures to free dogs from hazards, secure fencing, covered pool etc;

  • The living conditions for the dogs;

  • Overall atmosphere (dogs pick up on that so much);

  • How the staff interacts with the dogs;

  • Staff-to-dog ratio;

  • Caregiver/ team’s experience and qualifications;

  • If the caregiver is knowledgeable about dog behavior.

A great way to gauge if they are knowledgeable about dog behavior is by asking specific behavior questions. For example, if you have a small dog, ask if they understand small dogs’ special requirements and inquiry about their measures to keep small dogs feeling safe and comfortable.

Important questions to ask:

  • Do they have any reference from previous clients? Especially if reviews are not available online.

  • Do they have a screening process for dogs staying at the facility? A responsible caregiver should screen dogs for compatibility, behavior, and health issues to ensure a safe and harmonious environment.

  • What’s the daily routine and activities provided for the dogs? Look for a structured schedule that includes regular feeding times, exercise, playtime, and socialization opportunities.

  • Do they have a protocol for medication administration or dietary restrictions?

  • Do they keep you updated daily? e.g photos, videos, or written updates.

  • What’s their protocols for handling emergencies or medical issues that may arise during your pup's stay?

    If possible, schedule a trial day for your pet to assess their comfort level and compatibility with the caregiver and other dogs. Trust your instincts and choose a caregiver who makes you and your pet feel comfortable, safe and welcome.
